Brief

15 km from the city of Kramatorsk is a unique rocky outcrop of the Late Cretaceousor, named by locals as Bilokuzminivsky rocks (pillars).
This work participates in the "Ukrainian brands in global trends" contest. Speaking about Donetsk region, we immediately think about its coal mines. This mineral is really important, but I live in another district of our region, which is famous for chalk. Konstantinovsky and Slovyansky districts are especially rich in it. 15 km from the city of Kramatorsk is a unique rocky outcrop of the Late Cretaceousor, named by locals as Bilokuzminivsky rocks (pillars). This is a geological monument of our area.Industrial chalk mining has been carried out here since 1972, but today it is more about a tourist attraction. During the tours, professional guides tell many interesting facts. For example, almost 90 million years ago there was a sea in this place. For a long time, water surrounded the soil, from which layers of chalk gradually began to appear on the surface. Now these chalk pillars reach 25 meters in height! In addition to chalk, silicon, rubble, manganese, marcasite were found here. This place is also important from an archaeological point of view. Here the remains of ancient animals and plants were found, as well as traces of prehistoric people. This place was so attractive for them due to its raw materials necessary for tools and weapons. The ruins of an ancient castle could be seen there. Artificial caves, which appeared after the industrial extraction of chalk, resemble the constantly open doors or large windows of this imaginary fortress. And the tops of these unusual rocks look like large towers, from which you can see the vast steppes of the Donetsk region. The highest rock is Sword Forest. In the 16th century, the Cossacks used the rock as an observation post. For the same purposes, it was used by soldiers during World War II. Low Cretaceous hills are located to the east of this mountain, where sometimes Orthodox monks lived. If you are interested in the geographical and geological history of Ukraine, then you definitely should come here!
