Holy Intercession Church and Fortress

The Church and Fortress of the Holy Intercession are located in the village of Sutkivtsi, Yarmolynets region. This complex is a unique monument of medieval cult-military architecture of the XV-XVI centuries not only in Podillya, but also in Ukraine.

This work participates in the "Ukrainian brands in global trends" contest.There is an assumption that the castle and the church were a single defensive complex, because, as researchers point out, the walls of the castle and the church are made in the same style and from limestone. It’s believed, that these two buildings were connected by an underground passage.After restoration work was carried out in the early 1990s, the Holy Intercession Church in Sutkovets came back to life, but not a fortress. The last one was destroyed by Tatars in 1567. Later the fortress was rebuilt several times, but it finally lost its defensive significance in 1792, after the last campaign organized by Catherine II to the Crimea. Gradually, stone by stone, the locals dismantled the fortress for their own needs. Now the traveler's eye is pleased with only one tower.However, these remains of Sutkovets Fortress and the ancient Church of the Intercession are a unique decoration of the Podilsk land.
